The story follows childhood friends Matsuri Kazamaki and Suzu Kanade, who share the ability to see Ayakashi – youkai beasts that feed on life force. Suzu, who is an Ayakashi medium, is an especially desirable target for these beasts due to her ample life force. Matsuri, who hails from a long line of exorcist ninjas, vows to protect her. As he fiercely defends her, their relationship evolves from friendship into something more.
The two are soon confronted by Shirogane, the King of Ayakashi, who is determined to devour Suzu. Matsuri attempts to seal Shirogane’s powers, but as his last attempt to get between the two lovebirds, the Ayakashi uses a forbidden spell to turn him into a girl instead.

When he shows it to his parents, they tell him he is eligible to become the next Demon Lord, and he is soon brought to a demonic academy to hone his devilish magic powers and compete against other candidates for the title.
