Loot Season 1 Review, Recap and Ending Explained

Loot, an Apple TV+ series created by Alan Yang, just finished its first season. It stars Maya Rudolph as Molly Novak and is a humorous satire about philanthropy. After she divorced her husband of 20-years (John Novak, played by Adam Scott), she must decide what to do about her $87 billion settlement. Her identity was based on John’s wife and the wealth she had. She was able to do very little for herself. Her next step is not about money, but about self-discovery. She uses her wealth to start her own charity foundation.

Loot Season 1 Recap

Loot Season 1 Recap

Loot (Season 1) begins with Molly Novak, Maya Rudolph, on a boat ride along with her husband John (Adam Scott). It becomes obvious very quickly that the couple have several billions in their bank accounts due to the extravagant lifestyle they live. We see a glimpse of dissatisfaction in Molly’s eyes as she celebrates her party. Then we are able to see the things that have ripped her marriage apart. She meets Hailey (Dylan Gelula), near John’s closet, and learns all about their affair. She is devastated by her loss and decides to party with Nicholas (Joel Kim Booster), as she doesn’t know how to deal with it.

She decides to work for her charity foundation and become more involved in philanthropic activities. She meets Howard (Ron Funches), their IT guy, Arthur Nat Faxon (as accountant), and Sofia Salinas, (MJ Rodriguez), the foundation’s director. She discovers that a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held the next day. She decides, per her usual, to show off her wealth, even though she is unaware of how tone-deaf the ceremony is, since it involves unhoused persons.Sofia mentions that she is the same and goes back with just her car. She shares the ride with Arthur. She decides to donate some of the items she considers essentials to those in attendance at the ceremony and makes a fool out of herself on national television. Sofia doesn’t care about her first world problems, even as she tries to hide the mess. This is where the duel between these two characters begins.

Molly is still a part the foundation, despite Sofia’s dislike for Molly’s ignorance. Molly tries to meet the staff and is later sent a series of documents by Sofia that she can read to learn more about the foundation’s work. Molly finds this tedious so she decides to go on a staff bonding retreat to Miami. This is a far cry from her normal routine of just randomly going to expensive places on a whim. Sofia doesn’t like this because it slows down her work schedule for the meeting with a councilmember. She accepts it because it makes her staff happy. They have to land an emergency aircraft somewhere Sofia doesn’t have internet access. This is due to weather issues. She rushes to leave, and the entire staff follows. Molly returns home alone after her failed bonding attempt. She observes her friends’ entitled behavior during dinner and realizes that she is not like them. The meeting is delayed until the next day. Sofia leads the meeting, but Molly comes in to help and somehow make it a success. To her surprise, she asks her staff to come along to the meeting at a local bar. She expresses her gratitude to Sofia and her desire to learn from her in her quest to win her trust.

Loot Season 1 Recap

John is interviewed by Hailey after the divorce. He boasts about his self-worth and shows no remorse. Molly is even mocked by him and mentions her dislike of working at domestic cocktail parties. Molly is furious and decides to do everything she can to prove him wrong. Sofia supports Molly wholeheartedly. To be able to provide intelligent responses in interviews, she must know more about the foundation than just a few facts. Sofia doesn’t have the time or the knowledge to fully understand the foundation’s history, so she gives up and quits. She later appears on a YouTube interview show, and she makes a fool of herself. Howard and Nicholas form an unlikely friendship at work, sharing wisdom and a desire to help each other.

Another day, people in a Philippine theme park are still stuck on a upside-down roller coaster. Molly is the one who is responsible for this sensational news story. The theme park is owned by her company. She seeks Arthur’s assistance in her efforts to resolve the issue. Together, they decide to meet up to discuss it. Although they are only colleagues, there is rumour that they may be in a relationship. Howard discovers a draft of the audition scene in the xerox machine at the office and asks Nicholas. Howard decides to get Nicholas motivated to pursue this acting role. Sofia struggles initially with her appeal at a meeting with city council. However, Molly’s involvement with the foundation gains them their trust, which is surprising for a woman in her situation. She later mentions this to Molly, but advises her to be more accountable for her words and actions. Arthur and Molly keep their heads down and don’t pay attention to gossip in the news. They start to feel a spark of interest in each other, but they decide to keep it quiet for their own reasons.

Arthur and Molly are awkward in their interactions the next day but decide to keep their relationship professional. Sofia becomes angry at Rhonda (Meagan Fy) and Ainsley(Stephanie Styles) after a mess-up. Molly plans on making it a mental health day, and taking Sofia and the two employees to a spa boutique to relieve stress. Although the place is not for Sofia, she accepts it after experiencing the peace and relaxation it offers. Molly is introduced to Jacinda (CaitlinReilly), a friend from her past. She mentions that Hailey would be better if she was with her on one their outings. Molly is annoyed by this and decides to vent her anger. Unfortunately, her spa membership is permanently suspended after she lashes out. Molly is accompanied by female employees from the office who offer their emotional support. She is left behind by old friends, but she finds new friends who are more caring, kind, and compassionate than her previous friends. Arthur is at work with Howard and Nicholas who agree to help him find a date. They fill out Arthur’s dating bio and believe it will help him win the dating pool. To their delight, Arthur managed to impress a woman at the bar by engaging in a casual, monotonous conversation. Howard and Nicholas are both impressed by Howard’s old-school method of impressing people.

Episode 6 of Loot opens with many local people cheering after receiving a generous donation by Molly. This small activity brings her back into the conversation, and it’s also for charity. She later learns she will be receiving a prestigious award at the gala and joins the foundation staff. She is thrilled to receive this praise but John, along with Hailey, also attends the gala. This makes her feel worse and lowers her self-worth. Howard & Arthur continue to speak with the wealthy, white attendees of the gala. Howard impresses them with his quick and easy communication. Arthur compliments Howard for his ability to have a conversation on his own. This rather makes him feel existential anxiety about where he is in life.

Loot Season 1 Recap

Molly later meets John in a specially reserved room, where they had met before the divorce. He tells Molly that she received this award on his recommendation. He also says that she would not be what she is without John. They have a heart-warming conversation in which Molly appears to reflect on her self-worth, and whether or not she is worthy of the award. When she is finally called to the stage, she brings her staff up and says that they are more deserving of the award than she for the hard work they have put in. She meets Jean-Pierre (Olivier Martinez), an obscenely wealthy French philanthropist and becomes smitten with him. He asks her to join him in the future and she agrees.

The 7th episode of Season 1 Episode of Loot features Molly opening a Cerritos community center when Jean-Pierre stops by to invite her to dinner at his winery. The foundation staff attempts to convince Molly that Jean-Pierre is only interested in her. Arthur later walks up to Molly as she is trying to choose an outfit for Jean-Pierre’s meeting. He is jealous but assures Molly that she will look beautiful no matter what she wears. Jean-Pierre does not seem to be interested in her romantically, unlike her employees. He tells her his childhood story and how he rejected the wealth of his family until his grandfather asked him to continue his family’s legacy. Because he believed helping others would give him meaning in life, it impressed her as it was different from the rich people she had known.

Howard is still at the washroom, so Nicholas goes with his girlfriend to dinner. Howard is going to the bathroom, and the girlfriend tells Nicholas that she’s not interested in Howard. But when Howard returns from the toilet, she continues to act in love with him. Nicholas warns him later about his lack of romantic involvement. This backfires on him. Molly wanders back and forth on the vine, pondering whether or not it’s a date. Jean-Pierre finally confesses to Molly his love and deep connection with her. They then kiss.

Loot Season 1 Recap

They meet again after this romantic day. Jean-Pierre expresses the desire to meet Molly’s family. This triggers unpleasant memories. She says that she doesn’t get along well with them. Molly later talks with Howard about their families, especially Renee, her cousin who hasn’t spoken to Molly since Molly’s wedding. Howard suggests that a Spades night could be a great opportunity for them to reconnect. At the office, Sofia is visited daily by Tony, while Jaylin sends her a bouquet. Arthur and Nicholas spy on her. Later, she tells them about Arthur and Nicholas spying on her. Arthur mentions that men who show grand gestures win because of his own experience and the loss of Molly to Jean Pierre. Nicholas believes that Nicholas would win if he was thoughtful enough to show up.

Things don’t start off on a positive note at the Spades night. Renee greets Molly with an icy welcome. Molly attempts to rekindle Renee’s memories from the dance they did together. Renee is relieved when she finally shares moments of mutual joy. She is furious when Molly buys a table that she has paid a lot of money for. They remained apart over the years because of the same issue. Howard later tries to convince Renee Molly is a decent person. This is not her impression. Molly then enters the room to reveal the embarrassing reason she was unable to attend Renee’s wedding. After many years, their meeting ends on a sweet note. Sofia informs Arthur about Jaylin and Tony after their conversation.

Loot Season 1 Recap

Sofia appears to be thrilled by the team’s approval of her proposal in the next episode. Molly gives the staff information about the brand water filter unit that she will be presenting with Jean-Pierre. She announces this to Sofia at a board meeting, where she is bombarded by questions from people who are critical of her wealth. After the meeting is over, she’s attacked by a group with a piece of pie. Arthur intervenes and saves her. He does it for good-heartedness but this doesn’t win him over.

Howard compliments Nicholas as he gets the chance to play the role of the lead in one the plays. Nicholas is nervous about this more meaty role. Howard helps Nicholas to get in touch and feel better about his feelings. Howard gets a call from his girlfriend before the performance. She calls him throughout the day, but he doesn’t answer. He gets frustrated by his girlfriend’s indifference to his kindness and ends his relationship with her.

Loot Season 1 Review

Loot Season 1 Review

Loot (Season 1) employs a humanist lens in order to follow Molly through her divorce process. It also critiques the practice of feeling more wealthy than oneself while still living an extravagant lifestyle. The script is a critique of wealthy people and their façade of generosity. However, Molly’s character development on an emotional level still makes the script resonate. Molly works for the foundation to reconnect with the real world she has been avoiding over the years. Through the process, her learnings have made her a more humane person. The unlikely love triangle of Jean-Pierre, Nicholas and Nicholas is more than meets the eye. This puts her in a difficult decision between luxury and meaning, as Alan Yang mentioned during an interview.

It shines in the way Loot handles Molly’s emotional turmoils. Because of the clever direction and skill required to sustain the drama, it elevates the impact. The execution is also a bit of quiet reflection. It holds onto the drama without trying to be funny or lose its audience. One of Molly’s conversations about her worth with Jon is here. She also tries to make contact with Jean-Pierre to assure herself that her life is meaningful and not just a show of artifice.

Loot is a great example of this. You think of Veep when you think about great television satires. But you also think of Succession. These shows are great because they can fire on all cylinders, while mocking the lives of the characters and offering honest criticism. Loot believes that the show’s weak point is its inability to reach this level. It doesn’t go all out in its satire. The script is not as evocative as it could be. However, it does not go much deeper into the drama of her self exploration. Although there is nothing wrong with humanism mixed with cynicism it doesn’t make the series a clear winner.

Loot Season 1 Review

Loot (Season 1) is not without its strengths. The series’ best feature is the way the narrative weaves the relationships between its characters. The endearing nature their journey to closerness, whether it be between Sofia & Molly and Howard & Nicholas is too sweet to ignore. Nat Faxon, Ron Funches and Joel Kim Booster deserve a lot of credit. Each of them is a star and make this season so dramatic.

Although Maya Rudolph is a great actress, as she has been for years, her writing is not up to the mark in terms of comedy or drama. This series has all the charm of American sitcoms, where you feel for the characters and want what is best for them. The series is not just exemplary for its good-heartedness.

Loot The Ending explained

Loot The Ending explained

The grand display of the water filter model Molly and Jean Pierre worked on together is featured in the final episode of Loot (Season 1). Nicholas and all Foundation employees in Corsica are invited to the play. Molly apologizes to Nicholas for not being there. Molly appeared stressed before the Summit about aspects of her presentation which hardly mattered. Sofia suggests that she go to LA and help the people there, as it is only a showcase. Sofia is concerned that Molly may be influenced by a wealthy man with this new project. This angers Molly who insists that it’s her vision as much as his.

Howard and Nicholas learn from Arthur that he has broken up with Molly, the woman he met at a bar. Later, he reveals that he is in love with Molly but isn’t sure what to do. They mention that Arthur, rather than Jean-Pierre can be a good choice for her. Molly presented the water purification device at the Summit presentation. The water is a dark brown color when she takes it out. She gushes that the water was safe, despite how it looked. This is because of the billions she spent designing the machine. Jean-Pierre ends their relationship with Molly after the disastrous display of their project. He wants to keep out of the public eye. Molly then gives her resignation to Sofia. She states that she is vitally involved in the foundation’s team building. She mentions that Molly is not the problem, but that her money is.
Molly, who is back at the panel discussion the next day, mentions that the products being discussed on that stage, like hers aren’t solutions, but distractions. She also mentions that they can’t change the world because they come from billionaires like herself. She says “Billionaires shouldn’t exist,” and then she adds “I shouldn’t exist.” This is where her self-realization comes out.

She is warmly embraced by foundation workers later. Nicholas is disturbed when she announces that all her money will be donated. She assures Nicholas that it won’t matter, and she also says that she will continue to attend his performances. Arthur then tells her that he has something to talk with her. We don’t hear them talk. We see Molly wake up beside John and Arthur in a bed. This ending can be seen as Molly’s confusion after making such a sudden decision. It can also be seen through a cynical perspective – affirming Molly’s speech about billionaires’ selfish nature.

Review Before To Watch Loot Season 2

Review Before To Watch Loot Season 2

Loot is an Apple TV comedy series that stars Maya Rudolph as Molly Wells Novak. She’s a newly-minted billionaire, and the third-richest woman on the planet. Molly is left with the pain of her divorce after John Novak (Adam Scott), her husband, cheats on her with another woman. Molly will need to fund charity work through her non-profit foundation, as money won’t cover the gap in her heart.

Molly was shocked to learn about the real problems facing her community. But her involvement could make matters worse for the Wells Foundation’s director.

Sofia Salinas, the stellar Michaela Jae Rodriguez, is the executive director at the Wells Foundation and serves as the voice of reason for Molly on her journey to self-realization. Sofia, Loot‘s moral guide, is often Molly’s catch-all character. She represents the show’s intended principles and balances Molly’s superficiality.

One scene shows Sofia being taken by a ridesharing company to a charity event in an area populated with homeless people. Sofia stops the car and walks the remainder of the way after the driver said that “those people need get off their arses and get a job.” She says, “I have a policy in my life that if someone says “those people”, I end the conversation.” “So, thank-you. Have a great day!

Review Before To Watch Loot Season 2

This kind of backbone and no-nonsense attitude makes Sofia instantly likable. However, her inherent goodness is ultimately a poor attempt at giving Loot its moral soul. Loot is still committed to the world of the one per cent, despite all of its advocacy for those less fortunate.

For the first half of season 1, the working class characters from the Wells Foundation are depicted as little more than caricatures-especially next to Molly’s lively persona and fleshed out problems. Even less prominent are the perspectives of people living in poverty.

Except for one episode where concerned LA citizens voice their disapproval of Molly. They don’t want a billionaire taking decisions about their neighborhood. However, their concerns are ignored and they are seen as hateful, spiteful activists rather than intelligent critics.

To be fair to the creators, season 1 makes it clear that Loot is intentionally mocking the self-proclaimed “heroic status” of billionaires around the world. Although Molly’s journey to become a billionaire may have been tongue-in-cheek, it doesn’t mean that her journey is worth the effort.

Review Before To Watch Loot Season 2

Molly has two sides to her character arc. The first is a journey of self-actualization, and healing after her husband’s loss. The other is a predictable story in which Molly uses charity to feel better about herself and learns about how she can make a difference. Even though Loot takes Molly’s character to a more sensitive place, it doesn’t compensate for the many mistakes it made along the way. It’s difficult to fully invest in Molly’s story, even with Rudolph’s charisma and talent.

Loot should be pitched as a show that champions the working class and takes down billionaires. There are better ways than focusing on a billionaire.

It would have been easier to convey the same message if Molly had followed Sofia (Joel Kim Booster), or Molly’s assistant Nicholas. These characters are people (with less relatable obstacles) with a foot in both of these worlds. Molly Wells Novak, however, is only part of one world for the duration of season 1. It’s not the one Loot is championing.
